Good post, captivating as always. If you want to keep your name and for your husband to keep his, may I suggest marrying a Spaniard. My family (the old ones at least) back in England still make the mistake of casually referring to my wife as Mrs. Mole. She's definitely not, though. The idea of a woman taking her husband's name is alien to her. I like that, too. As ridiculous as it is though to be embarrassed by a name, I really hate mine! Goes back to being a kid - all the jokes, songs, nicknames, etc. I am a mole and I live in a hole.

As for exes, I never talk about them. Think about them a lot though.

Brilliant essay. Thank you.

Hope you return to it and continue… see where it takes you- maybe to the present.

This paragraph:

‘I hold my hand to my heart and feel the heat of honesty. In certain retellings, I want to forgive. I want to lay a story to rest. I have decided to slow down and, as I do, memories enter my hands, my mind, my body with the intensity of a final breath.’

is one to save . Print it out and keep it on your desk . It beautifully describes and invokes the perfect state of mind to begin writing. Thanks for that as well.
